Athlete of the Month

The Team Sheeper Athlete of the Month award is handed out to a member of the team on a monthly basis, 7 or 8 times a year. The AOM is someone who made a notable contribution to the team or did something remarkable. Selection is made by nomination and voting by the membership.

You can nominate anyone and the nomination period is usually during the first week or two of the month. Look for notification that nominations are being sought.  When nomination close, the voting starts and once all the votes are tallied, the new AOM is crowned.

Besides bragging rights for a month, our AOM gets some goodies from our gracious sponsors, such as free shoes from TRH, a massage from SMI, gift certificates from GoRide.

The Runner's High is proud to sponsor this month's athlete who embodies the spirit of Team Sheeper. We are about more than just improving athletic skills and performances.

Are you currently employed and/or describe your employment/career?

I am about to finish my Ph.D. in counseling psychology at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Starting in September, I will be teaching two classes at the university; this is my first time teaching my own classes, and I'm very excited!

Do you have any specific career aspirations?

I hope my degree will prepare me for a career teaching, supervising, and practicing psychotherapy.

Do you have a spouse or children to tell us about?

No, but I have a guide dog, Tammy, who goes with me everywhere. She is an eight-year-old black lab with a sweet disposition and a silly streak.

What other hobbies do you have?

I like to play jazz piano, go hiking with Tammy, and make pottery on the wheel.

How did you become involved with Team Sheeper?

I learned about the pool while doing Team in Training last year. I first joined the master's team and then tried out the triathlon team in the spring.

What is your athletic background?

While I have done some yoga and recreational sports, I have mostly been a student all my life. I did my first triathlon on a whim last year during a leave-of-absence from grad school.

What is it you like most about triathlons?

I love the sensation of being outdoors in the wind and sun and water. I like hearing the energy of the people around me, and I like feeling my body move through the world in a different way. As a blind woman, I don't consistently experience the sensation of moving freely, so I treasure the moments—many of which occur while swimming, biking, or running—that I feel this freedom.

What races are you planning for the remainder of this year, or the future, that you are gearing up for?

For the most part, I plan to re-engage with the endurance event of graduate school. I do hope to travel to Australia next year to help represent the physically challenged athletes at Worlds. What an awesome way to experience another country!

What are your Triathlon, or personal goals / aspirations?

My personal goal is to live a balance of mind, body and spirit and between self and others. I hope triathlons will continue to be part of this balance.

What is your favorite Team Sheeper workout or memorable moment?

I had fun doing the duathlon with Sally and participating in some of the more whimsical Friday swim practices. I also really enjoyed the killer quad.

Is there anything else we should know about you?

I wish you all well and hope to come back and visit during holidays. My sincerest thanks go out to those of you who helped guide me in the past 5 months.
